Day 2 Deck Profile: Adam Munkhzaya's Chaos Toolbox Turbo

6/2/2018

Adam Munkhzaya, otherwise known as Dinosaur_Ryuzaki, has come a long way since his breakout win at FLC2 two months earlier.

Compared to the list he used to win FLC2 back in March, Munkhzaya's latest decklist is remarkably streamlined. Many of these changes are not particularly interesting in themselves: two copies of Tsukuyomi instead of one, one copy of Merchant as opposed to two to pair with the single Reincarnation, and so on. However, the most effective addition this weekend has proven to be the single copy of Mask of Darkness. One might call this a "tech" at first glance, but it's actually a secondary engine all on its own: Munkhzaya has shaved the standard second copy of Sakuretsu and included single copies of other Traps such as Trap Dustshoot, Divine Wrath, and even Bottomless Trap Hole to give himself a surprisingly diverse toolbox of options to reuse with his Mask. In the long game, the value of this cannot be understated. When a Turbo mirror match is reduced to a simple board -- and it eventually will be, despite the early-game expansions -- interactions like these can be exactly the edge Munkhzaya needs to gain the edge.

Look no further than the side deck to see another new addition that has served Munkhzaya well this weekend. Two copies of Greenkappa provide a much-needed safety net against the ever-popular aggro decks of the FLC circuit that seem to be playing more and more Trap Cards with each passing day. When Greenkappa activates in the Damage Step, Munkhzaya's opponent isn't even able to chain Scapegoat, a trick that's worked for him a few times so far as well. He's incorporated Mind Control to pair with his remaining sided Dustshoots for mirror matches. Today, Munkhzaya is facing off against a rival European in Chevalier de Fromage, the only Empty Jar player in day 2. If he can pull off the win there, Munkhzaya just might be posed to become the very first two-time FLC Champion this weekend!
