Day 2 Wrap-Up

6/2/2018

Congratulations to SparkyFlary, the newest Format Library Champion!
Picture
This Day 2 was a lot to take in.

First, the top two seeds of Top 8 were upset in their quarters rounds, both in brutal game 5 scenarios. When all hope seemed lost for InsiDS, Jazz opened with a terrible five cards in a first-damage overtime game, letting InsiDS advance to face Ryuzaki, who had just narrowly escaped defeat at the hands of Chevalier de Fromage and his notorious Empty Jar deck. Then Brandis72 had to forfeit his quarters match while sidedecking for game 5, leaving SparkyFlary to advance with his Gearfried deck to face Shane's Aggro Burn. He took the match convincingly 3-1, while Dinosaur_Ryuzaki did the same in his own semis match. With Ryuzaki just a game away from taking his second Format Library Championship title, SparkyFlary pulled off a stunning upset and earned Gearfried its first FLC title!

There are many important metagame takeaways from this past weekend, but a few stand out above the rest. Goat Control is alive and well at all levels of competition, with a convincing majority in both the Day 1 and Day 2 fields. We seem to have escaped a Goat Format Burn-pocalypse for now, but perhaps to fill the void left by Stall Burn in this Day 2 bracket, we saw a surprising resurgence of aggro decks, mirroring trends from the first FLC back in February. That trend has finally extended all the way to a title for SparkyFlary this weekend! Thank you once again to all of our viewers and competitors, and see you again in July for Format Library Championship V!
